February 2024 Update

Philakade finally has potable water security.  Our 4th drill was successful.

Philakade struggled from the outset with water security – with no municipal water for five months in 2021 and often no municipal water (or rain) for up to three weeks.

It was never easy to get municipal water tankers to fill up at least one 5000 L tank  and we had to resort to carting 25 litre containers of water to Philakade from Hillcrest for drinking, cooking and “bird bathing” residents.

The water test showed the need to filter the water and a filtration pump has been installed.  We started pumping water this week into holding tanks and through the filtration system to the care home. This borehole will be providing water for the local community in the form of two “push down” gravity fed taps, as well as for Philakade Care home, the clinic, orphanage and church.

AND  we are up and running on solar power. A wonderful week at Philakade. We are so very grateful to all our donors who made “coming off the grid” possible.
