Hello to all our wonderful friends near and far, in South Africa and across the globe.
It’s hard to believe how quickly this year has flown by and how much we’ve managed to fit in! It has been a while since our last update, so we’re excited to share some of the highlights from life here at Philakade.
Outings & Adventures
Our residents have enjoyed some wonderful outings, including another trip to the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium to watch a soccer match. The excitement always begins on the road, followed by the energy of the game itself and, of course, the post-match discussions over dinner, where players and referees alike are thoroughly analysed!

Furry Friends & Special Visitors
We’ve continued to be blessed with visits from Angel Paws and their furry therapists – always a highlight for everyone. Sadly, our own little hound, Lucy, was unwell and spent a few days at the vet. She’s back home now, but on a special diet. With nearly 150 caring people eager to slip her treats, managing her meals is quite the challenge, but Cedric has taken the lead, and Lucy is in good hands.

Improvements Around Philakade
We are always looking for ways to improve our home. Recent updates include:
- A new concrete coffee shop patio, replacing the old wooden one.
- A sluice sink to assist with caring for washable nappies.
- Second-hand filing cabinets to improve our record-keeping system.
Small changes, but each one makes a big difference in how we live and work together.

Mandela Day 2025
In South Africa, July is a time to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy by giving back through acts of service. This year, we were humbled by the generosity of several groups who visited Philakade, bringing gifts, joy, and fellowship to our residents.
Naturally, no Mandela Day is complete without a traditional South African braai (barbecue)—a true celebration of community and togetherness!

A Resident Author
We are thrilled to share that one of our residents, Thokozani, has published a book about his life experiences. With the help of volunteers, his story has been translated and is now available for purchase at R80. Proceeds go directly to Thokozani, whose greatest wish is to inspire others through his story of redemption and hope. Truly, dreams have no limits.

Fresh Starts & Daily Joys
Volunteers recently helped us refresh the curtains over the children’s beds, giving the rooms a bright and welcoming feel just in time for spring.

Day to day, our residents and staff continue to find creative and joyful ways to spend their time—gardening, crafts, pool tournaments, games mornings, and even the occasional movie session in the lounge.

Staff Care & Special Celebrations
Caring for others can be deeply rewarding, but also emotionally demanding. In August, we hosted a compassion fatigue workshop for our staff—a much-needed morning to focus on their wellness. Their dedication is at the heart of Philakade, and investing in them is investing in our residents.

We also celebrated Women’s Month with a pamper morning for our ladies, complete with foot spas, mini-manicures, and a delicious tea. The smiles on their faces said it all—love, care, and community were felt in every detail.
